Mark 2:3-4
And they brought to Jesus a paralytic, carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him. When they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralyzed man lay.

Today's Headlines

Golf tournament a success. The Four Friends Golf Classic on April 15 raised over $17,000 for the new clinic in Los Pinos. A special "thank you" to tournament director Jeff Fowler and all who helped make this event a huge success. Pictures from the tournament have been added to this website.

Returning from Guatemala today. I made a quick trip this week to Jalapa to bring medicines and to organize a system for purchasing medications monthly within Guatemala. We will start the in-country purchasing system in June. Pray that a supply of medicines will always be available with this new system.

The remaining information below is fresh news from my trip to Jalapa this week:

A Guatemalan physician willing to help. Melani is a young Guatemalan doctor who just finished medical school in Guatemala City and will soon start her surgery residency. She has helped Gustavo with two medical teams this year and is interested in helping in Jalapa as time permits. Hopefully she will be able to join our medical mission team from Alabama in October.

Not one, but two! Remember the deaf four-year-old Guatemalan boy who needs a cochlear implant but can't afford it? Sometimes God gives more abundantly than we can imagine. Two implant donations have recently been approved for him, one from the United States and the other from Spain. Each has a value of $30,000. His parents are deciding which one to choose.

A new youth ministry. The teenagers at the downtown church are creating decorative metal works and selling them. (I will add pictures to the website soon). Prices range from $5 to $20. Ten percent is given to the church, fifteen percent to the instructor, and the remainder goes to the youth themselves. It's a great way for them to learn a craft and stewardship at the same time.

Los Laureles update. Because of the problems getting medications into the country, the clinic was closed a couple of weeks in April. It is now open again Monday through Saturday of every week. I was able to minister there Tuesday and Wednesday. We treated 89 patients ranging in age from 1 month to 82 years. One lady came an hour-and-a-half one way by bus. It is wonderful to see the number of diabetics and hypertensives who come to receive medication.

Pray for Patricia. She is the faithful lady who cleans the Los Laureles clinic each day. She has had a prolonged gastrointestinal illness that hasn't responded to treatment. She is losing weight and becoming malnourished. She was recently refused hospitalization in Guatemala City due to lack of available beds. She has become too sick to clean the clinic and cannot adequately care for her four children. Pray that doors may open for her to medical care and restoration of health.

Los Pinos update. Construction of the roof of the new clinic was halted in April while awaiting transfer of funds. It is scheduled to begin again next week. I will add up-to-date pictures of the clinic to the website after I return home. You will notice in these pictures that the foundation of the church next door has been completed. This was done through donations and offerings received from the Guatemalan congregation. They are so excited about worshiping in this building that they have financed the foundation themselves! Those of you who have been there know what a financial sacrifice it was for them. In August, a team from the U.S. will come to start the church walls. Pray that work will be able to continue on both clinic and church.

Future dates. The next medical mission trip to Jalapa is October 7-13. We will work in both Los Laureles and Los Pinos that week. The first trip in 2018 will be April 28-May 4. The clinic at Los Pinos will be furnished and dedicated that week. Details about the October trip will be available on the website next month. If the Lord directs and the timing is right, we would love for you to join us on either of these trips.
